The pieces themselves
Not everything good belongs to a particular room. This is the running list — the things I keep coming back to, sorted by the moment you actually need them.
01 · Storage & organisation
The category that quietly decides everything
Babies are small; their belongings are not, and the contents change completely twice a year. Everything here still works when that happens.
- Woven rope baskets with handles, set of two Under $35 One for laundry, one for whatever wanders in from the living room. Handles matter — you will carry these every day. View on Amazon
- Hanging closet organiser, six shelves Under $25 Baby clothes are too short to hang usefully. Shelves by size, and when the 0–3m shelf empties, that stage is over. View on Amazon
- Rolling under-crib bins Under $30 Around eight cubic feet of storage that costs no floor space at all. Best value in the room. View on Amazon
- Over-door organiser Under $22 The back of the door is the last free surface anywhere. Diapers, wipes, creams. View on Amazon
- Printable storage labels Casa Bea · $6 Sizes 0–3m through 2T plus blanks, in the same typeface as the prints. Casa Bea shop
02 · The nursing corner
One square metre, a thousand hours
You will spend more time here than anywhere else in the house for about a year. Get the light right first.
- Warm-dim table lamp Under $45 2700K or lower. Reachable without standing up — obvious at 2pm, revelatory at 3am. View on Amazon
- Small-space armchair, 27–30 in $140–$220 Firm beats soft: you have to be able to stand up out of it holding a sleeping baby. View on Amazon
- Storage footstool Under $60 Blankets inside, feet on top. View on Amazon
- C-table or narrow side table with a lip Under $50 Water, phone, burp cloth — within reach and not knockable by an elbow. View on Amazon
- Cotton muslin blanket Under $30 For the chair. Ends up being the most-used object in the room. View on Amazon
03 · Feeding & bath
The messy half
Things that get used daily, wiped constantly, and are worth buying once in a material that survives it.
- Wooden high chair that pulls up to the table $90–$180 The ones that become a normal chair later earn their price twice. View on Amazon
- Silicone suction plates and bowls Under $30 Muted colours exist and are no more expensive. View on Amazon
- Coverall long-sleeve bib Under $20 The only kind that actually keeps the sleeves clean. View on Amazon
- Hooded towels, cotton, set of two Under $35 Two is the right number. Four means two of them live in the wash forever. View on Amazon
- Bath toy and sponge organiser Under $25 Drains properly, which is the whole job. View on Amazon
04 · Play & books
Things that live in the room all day
Play equipment sits in your living space for years, so it may as well be something you like looking at.
- Reversible foam play mat $60–$120 Plain, two-tone versions are easy to find now and read as a rug rather than as equipment. View on Amazon
- Picture-ledge bookshelf Under $30 Front-facing covers. Small children choose by the picture, so this is the difference between books read and books ignored. View on Amazon
- Large lidded toy basket Under $40 One big basket beats six small ones. Tidying has to be doable in ninety seconds or it doesn't happen. View on Amazon
- Low open shelf at toddler height Under $60 If they can't reach it, they won't put it away. That's a shelf problem, not a behaviour problem. View on Amazon
05 · Light & textiles
What actually sets the mood
Light and fabric do more for a room than furniture does, and cost a fraction as much.
- Blackout curtains or clip-in liner Under $50 The liner clips behind curtains you already own — cheaper, and reversible when you move. View on Amazon
- Plug-in wall sconce, no wiring Under $40 A lamp needs a table; a sconce needs a nail. Cord covers are worth the extra eight dollars. View on Amazon
- Dimmable amber night light Under $25 Amber rather than white. Enough to see by, not enough to wake anyone properly. View on Amazon
- Washable low-pile rug $70–$150 Washable is not a luxury here. Real jute is beautiful and will not survive year one. View on Amazon
- Wool or cotton throw Under $45 Natural fibres over acrylic, every time. It's the one thing you touch constantly. View on Amazon
06 · Out & about
Everything portable
The bag and the car are the two places where being organised saves actual minutes, daily.
- Diaper backpack with a changing mat $50–$90 Backpack, not shoulder bag. You will be carrying a child with the other arm. View on Amazon
- Packing cubes for the bag Under $20 One cube of spare clothes, permanently packed, permanently forgotten about until you need it. View on Amazon
- Back-of-seat car organiser Under $30 Wipes, snacks, a spare bottle. Reachable from the driver's seat, which is the point. View on Amazon
- Portable travel blackout blind Under $35 Suction cups, folds into nothing. Makes an unfamiliar room sleepable. View on Amazon
What isn't on this list
Cribs, mattresses, sleep products, bed rails and car seats. Those are safety decisions rather than taste decisions, and they belong with current safety guidance and your pediatrician rather than with a site about rugs and lamps.
