Seven Baskets That Hide All the Baby Clutter

Baby things multiply in bursts, usually after a birthday or a visit from relatives, and most of it is brightly coloured plastic that matches nothing. Baskets are the cheapest way to make a room look calm without getting rid of anything.

The seven

  • The big floor basket, for toys. Large, open, soft-sided, about 18 inches across with handles. Everything goes in at the end of the day — no lid, no sorting, no system.
  • A lidded basket for the medical-looking things. Medicines, spare bottles, the nasal aspirator. Some things shouldn't be on display even in a tidy room.
  • Matching shelf bins. Six identical bins read as storage; six different ones read as clutter whatever's inside. Buy one colour, one size.
  • A flat under-crib basket for off-season and next-size clothes. The space under a crib is roughly a chest of drawers laid flat.
  • A front-facing book basket. Toddlers choose books by the cover, so a basket where books stand up gets used where a shelf of spines doesn't.
  • A small handled caddy for the changing station, so it travels to wherever you actually end up changing the baby.
  • A mesh or slotted bath caddy. Bath toys don't drain, and a solid basket grows mould.

How to make it look deliberate

  • Stay in one material family. All woven, or all fabric. Mixing seagrass with canvas with plastic looks accidental.
  • Two or three quiet colours across the whole room. The toys are already loud.
  • Label anything with a lid. You will not remember.
  • Leave one shelf empty. A room where every surface is full still reads as cluttered.

Worth knowing

Baskets don't reduce how much you own; they move it somewhere the eye can rest. That's worth doing, but every few months you still have to open them and take things out. Put it in the calendar for when the baby moves up a clothing size — you'll be in there anyway.
