No Closet in the Nursery? Six Alternatives

Plenty of rooms that become nurseries were never bedrooms. You end up with four walls, a window and nowhere to hang anything. This is a smaller problem than it looks.

Most baby clothes are better folded than hung anyway, so the closet you're missing was never going to do as much work as you'd assume.

The six that work

  • A freestanding clothing rail. Baby hangers are narrow, so three feet of rail holds forty or fifty items — and you can see all of them at once, which counts at 3am.
  • A dresser as the main event. Vests, sleepsuits and jumpers all live fine folded. Add a waterproof mat on top and one piece of furniture is doing two jobs.
  • Open shelving with matching bins. Loose items on open shelves look like clutter; identical bins look like a system. Label the fronts.
  • A wall-mounted rail or pegs at adult height, for today's outfit, the sleep sack, the coat and the bag.
  • A shelf in your own closet. There's no rule that the baby's clothes have to be in the baby's room.
  • Under-crib bins for off-season and next-size-up clothes — the things you need to keep but won't touch for three months.

How to put it together

For most rooms the answer is two pieces: a dresser and a rail. The dresser handles everything folded and doubles as the changing station; the rail handles the few things that hang and makes the room look intentional rather than improvised. Add under-crib bins for overflow and you have more usable storage than a lot of rooms with built-in closets.

Worth knowing

The common mistake is buying a full-height wardrobe to replace the closet you don't have. In a small nursery it dominates the room, it sits mostly empty because baby clothes are tiny, and in two years you'll want it gone. Go low and go open.
